Roadworks: A421 Marsh Leys to A4280, in both directions: road marking renewal

Highways England will be carrying out essential road marking renewal works at the A421 Marsh Leys to A4280, in both directions. As part of this work, they will also be carrying out essential resurfacing works on the A4280 exit slip road alongside replacing road studs.

Highways England plan to complete this work over four weeks, from Saturday 5 September to Tuesday 6 October, working between the hours of 8pm to 6am on weekdays, subject to weather conditions. There will be one weekend full closure from 6am Saturday 5 September to 6am Sunday 6 September to undertake waterproofing on Castle Mill Viaduct.

Due to the extensive amount of work on this project, this has been split into six phases. Highways England have closely liaised with Bedfordshire Borough Council to agree the most suitable diversion routes for each phase as detailed below:

Diversion routes

Phases 1 and 4: The A421 eastbound Marsh Leys to the A6, starting Thursday 24 September to Tuesday 29 September. The A421 westbound A6 to Marsh Leys, starting Thursday 1 October to Tuesday 6 October. (Diagram 1)

Eastbound traffic will be diverted onto the A428 northbound at Marsh Leys and A4280 eastbound at Bromham/Biddenham, A5141, down Ashburnham Road, Preburn Street and Brittania Road to join the A6 and re-join the A421 at the A6/A421 junction. This diversion will be in place, in both directions.

Phases 2 and 5: The A421 eastbound A421/A6 interchange to A421/A603 interchange, starting Wednesday 16 September to Thursday 17 September. The A421 westbound A421/A603 interchange to A421/A6 interchange, will be closed for 1 night on Wednesday 30 September. (Diagram 2)

Eastbound traffic will be diverted off from the A421/A6 interchange onto the A6 northbound, Ampthill Road, to Rope Walk and then the A603 eastbound, Cardington Road, to re-join the A421 at the A603/A421 interchange. This diversion will be in place, in both directions.

Phases 3 and 6: The A421 eastbound A421/A603 interchange to A421/A4280 interchange, starting Friday 18 September to Wednesday 23 September. The A421 westbound A421/A4280 interchange to A421/A603 interchange, starting Saturday 5 September to Sunday 6 September. (Diagram 3)
