Update to roadworks information: A421 Marsh Leys to A4280, in both directions - road marking renewal

Highways England will be carrying out essential road marking renewal works at the above location, in both directions. As part of this work, they will also be carrying out essential resurfacing works on the A4280 exit slip road alongside replacing High Friction Surfacing.

Highways England plan to complete this work over three weeks, from Wednesday 16th September to Tuesday 6th October, working between the hours of 8pm to 6am on weekdays, subject to weather conditions.

Due to the extensive amount of work on this project, this has been split into six phases. Highways England have closely liaised with Bedfordshire Borough Council to agree the most suitable diversion routes for each phase. You can find further details about the diversions below.


Diversion routes

Phases 1 and 4: The A421 eastbound Marsh Leys to the A6, starting Thursday 1st October to Tuesday 6th October. The A421 westbound A6 to Marsh Leys, starting Tuesday 22nd September to Friday 25th September. (Diagram 1)

Eastbound traffic will be diverted onto the A428 northbound at Marsh Leys and A4280 eastbound at Bromham/Biddenham, A5141, down Ashburnham Road, Prebend Street and Britannia Road to join the A6 and re-join the A421 at the A6/A421 junction. This diversion will be in place, in both directions.

Phases 2 and 5: The A421 eastbound A421/A6 interchange to A421/A603 interchange, starting Wednesday 16th September to Thursday 17th September. The A421 westbound A421/A603 interchange to A421/A6 interchange, will be closed for 1 night on Monday 21 September. (Diagram 2)

Eastbound traffic will be diverted off from the A421/A6 interchange onto the A6 northbound, Ampthill Road, to Rope Walk and then the A603 eastbound, Cardington Road, to re-join the A421 at the A603/A421 interchange. This diversion will be in place, in both directions.

Phases 3 and 6: The A421 eastbound A421/A603 interchange to A421/A4280 interchange, for one night on Friday 18 September and returning on Monday 28th September until Wednesday 30th September. The A421 westbound A421/A4280 interchange to A421/A603 interchange, starting Saturday 5 September to Sunday 6 September. (Diagram 3) (Now complete)

Eastbound traffic will be diverted onto the A603 through Willington and Moggerhanger to the A603/A1 Sandy Roundabout, onto A1 northbound to re-join the A421 at Black Cat. This diversion will be in place, in both directions.
